Whatcha Say: The Good, The Bad And The Swift In This Week’s Reader Comments
This week we were rocked by Kanye West’s remix of Justin Bieber’s “Runaway Love,” rolled by Taylor Swift’s “Mine” video, shaken by Kylie Minogue’s “Get Outta My Way” video and stirred by the poster for upcoming Christina Aguilera/Cher flick Burlesque. Head below to see how our readers reacted to all this pop racket.
:: Marilyn kicked us to the curb on Mary J. Blige Tries To Get Down With “Break Up To Make Up”: “Wow…the author/ and editor-in-chief needs to be fired for posting this irrelevent and useless article… How dare u accuse an artist of Mary’s caliber of releasing something so elementary. The mere mentioning of this as a single, only makes u sond like a bitter, disgruntled, underpaid, attention-whore.”
:: Marc, however, felt Marilyn should clean out her ears: “so, what about the awful lyrics and boring chorus? when a song sucks, it sucks.”
:: Steve wasn’t feeling the amore on Watch Taylor Swift Fall In Love (What Else?) In Her “Mine” Music Video: “I don’t know I’m not really impressed. I feel like with someone with her amount of talent at writing a golden chorus should be able to venture out with subject matter a little bit.”
:: Lisa also piped up: “Wow, not really a TS fan but I was curious to see the new video. I really like it! Now, if someone could just fix her voice for when she sings live.”
:: Amelia Gaona displayed symptoms of Bieber fever on Listen To Kanye West And Raekwon’s Remix Of Justin Bieber’s “Runaway Love”: “Justin you r one sexy hottie! ! ! love you xoxooxox”
:: M was a fighter who believed in Xtina and Cher on Two Ghosts Star In Burlesque: “Even if the movie is a flop, who cares; most artist serve up a flop or two in there career. Christina has talent and when all else fails, she’ll fall back on her talent.”
:: JH was dazzled by Kylie Minogue Is All Color And Lights In Her “Get Outta My Way” Video: “Elegantly poptastic! And yeah, she totally brought it with the shoes, not to mention the hair. Loves it!”
:: And vertigoshtick conceded the following on the same post: “I don’t care for the song, but it’s her best video in years. And she looks better at 41/42 than most 20-somethings!”
:: highmigh seemed to be inventing a new language on Selena Gomez Showers Us With “A Day Without Rain” Video Stills: “Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, here are so hot and sexy girl, i see her photo and like her beutiness”
:: COMMENT OF THE WEEK — Finally, this week we chose a zinger that came in from nffcnnr via Twitter, regarding Ace Of Base’s Upcoming Album The Golden Ratio Gets A Release Date: “So let me get this straight…Ace of Base is the Swedish version of Menudo?”
Which Wigged Out Katy Perry From This German TV Spot Do You Prefer?
Katy Perry recently filmed a TV spot for the German TV show Star Force, and the happy pop songstress modeled three very different retro looks in the 90-second clip while dancing along to her single “Teenage Dream.” Watch the ad and pick your favorite wig below!
Now that you’ve seen the spot (sidenote: how come the U.S. doesn’t get awesome TV spots like this?), how do you most like your Katy? Blonde, and dolled up like a robot Marilyn Monroe:
Red-headed and mod, like what Minnie Mouse might look like if she were human:
Or brunette and on a rocket ship, as though she’s the new mascot of a 1950s burger joint:
One thing’s for certain—this girl really likes her wigs. Maybe Katy, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj can open up a Halloween costume store together. We’d shop there!
Ne-Yo Glows On His ‘Libra Scale’ Cover Art
Ne-Yo looks as sophisticated as ever on the cover art of his fourth studio album, Libra Scale (out October 18). But why does it look like an on-break catering staff is about to have a rooftop dance-fight with a few members of a white-outfits-only assassin squad? And is Ne-Yo playing referee, using his glowing cuff links as a stopwatch? That we don’t know. We would have much preferred a simple, striking image of the suited R&B singer alone than this thrown-together art—is it too late to nab the understated photo used on his “One In A Million” single sleeve instead?
The Wang And Only Lip Dub “Nothin’ On You” While Waiting For The Tooth Fairy
What better way to get into three-day weekend mode than with a delightfully hilarious YouTube lip dub? Today, the Internet gods have brought us the adorable and toothless Filipino duo, The Wang And Only with their ultra-animated interpretation of “Nothin’ On You”. These two youngsters must have practiced for hours because they nail every lyric and intonation. Jump below to see if you think The Wang And Only have anything on Bruno Mars and B.o.B.
We totally agree with one YouTube commenter who said, “You dont need teeth when u got style.”
We’re thankful these two have yet to discover Bruno’s latest hit “F**K You”, otherwise The Wang And Only would have their toothless grins washed out with soap.

Benji B to Replace Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC1 Program
BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Benji B is moving to BBC Radio 1 to host the Thursday 2 a.m.-4 a.m. slot, replacing Mary Anne Hobbs, who's been with the Beeb for 14 years.
Selena Gomez Gets Hot And Cold In “A Year Without Rain”
In her video for “A Year Without Rain”, the magnetic dance track we can’t seem to get out of our heads (in a good way), Selena Gomez looks enchanting while taking a joyride through the desert, taking a pit stop to get attacked by photographs and make eyes at one hunky dude. Watch a very mature Ms. Gomez pine in some intense heat by watching her video below. (Spoiler alert: It rains.)
Selena Gomez – “A Year Without Rain”
This is a beautifully shot clip that matches the elegance of the song perfectly—not to mention, that drop-dead-gorgeous gown is making our style-minded mouths water. (Think it’s available in her Dream Out Loud collection?)
Check out behind-the-scenes pics of the making of “A Year Without Rain” here, and watch some other desert-set music videos over yonder.
Eminem’s Unstoppable In His VMA Promo
One half of the Home And Home tour, Eminem, is the latest artist to star in MTV’s ever growing stack VMA promos. Unlike his predecessors, Em’s promo vid is dark and, quite frankly, kind of a downer. The ad begins like an Allstate commercial, with the bruised and battered rapper pulling himself from the rubble of a car crash. A crowd of people stare and then follow the Recovery performer as he stumbles down Hollywood Boulevard. Jump below to see how it all ends.
How do you think the “Love The Way You Lie” rapper’s clip compares to MTV’s other VMA spots?

PHOTOS: Rihanna’s On A Boat—Err, Battleship
Ahoy! Here’s Rihanna in Hawaii from the set of the upcoming film Battleship (based on the beloved board game). The “Only Girl (In The World)” singer makes her acting debut in this Peter Berg film, which is reported to cost over $200 million to make and will not be released until 2012—patience y’all. Check out the newest edition to Madame Tussauds in full costume as she attempts to get her sea legs on deck.
Curren$y and Big K.R.I.T. Book Tour Together
New Orleans-bred, New York-based cult rapper Curren$y makes supremely bleary rap music that sounds great when you're stoned, partly because you can always be pretty sure he was stoned when he made it; check the BNM'ed album Pilot Talk for evidence. Rising Mississippi MC/producer Big K.R.I.T. is a Southern rap traditionalist, and his tracks come with a full-bodied organic thump that captures some of that same haze. Smoke DZA made a mixtape with this cover. So it makes sense for all three of these rappers to link up for the aptly named Smoker's Club tour, which crosses North America next month.
Lauryn Hill Explains Her 12-Year Absence: “I Wanted A Real Life”
No longer recluse from the music scene, Lauryn Hill explained to FUSE backstage at her recent star-studded Rock The Bells performance why she decided to take such a long break from releasing music. “I was a stay-at-home mom,” the artist said, describing what her life has been like the past 12 years. Jump below for Hill’s full interview, where she explains what inspired her to finally return to performing.
Hill was already well-known for being in the highly respected hip-hop outfit The Fugees, but the singer scored an incredibly amount of success—as well as a flurry of Grammys—with her debut solo LP, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, released eons ago in 1998. Hill fled from the public quickly after, however, because she became a mother and wanted to make sure her children “had normalcy, privacy and the right to be real people without the scrutiny and the pressure and the challenges the media can put up sometimes. I wanted them to have a real childhood.”
“I wanted a real life as well outside of public scrutiny,” she tells FUSE. “I wanted that freedom to do whatever I wanted to do.”
As for why she’s finally making a comeback, the singer explained, “I think I’m ready to express myself again. You have to life life so you have something substantial to share, or it’s pointless and vain.”
Hill says there might be an album in the future, or at least “some recordings”, but didn’t seem completely positive when or how those would be released.
Are you guys happy to have Lauryn back, even in hyperspeed form?

Chelsea Handler Offends Kid Rock In Her VMA Promo
E!’s resident comedian Chelsea Handler is taking on hosting duties of the 2010 MTV VMAs, and but Handler has just one little problem—she’s offended pretty much every celebrity that will be in attendance at the awards fest. Except Kid Rock… although we may have spoke too soon. As her sidekick Chuy says in the promo: “Aaaawkward.” Check out Chelsea and Kid Rock’s VMA promos below:
“I’d do you after a fifth of whiskey,” says Kid Rock of Chelsea after a Lady Gaga vs. Snooki round of “Would You Rather.” The man is all charm.
Your Body Has a Right to Our Product
The Plashing Vole sent in this commercial for Sanex deoderant, which helpfully informs us that some elements of our beauty regimens aren’t things we can do, or might want to do; no, they’re obligations we have to our bodies, because our body parts have a fundamental right to the benefits of Sanex (sorry for the embedding problems, not sure what’s up):
The Rights of Undera..
Watch the ad…
So next time you’re thinking about discussing how beauty and hygiene standards are socially constructed, and increasingly invented by companies eager to make money by insisting that every part of our bodies is deficient (hypotrichosis, anyone?) and in need of intervention, think again. Your armpits, and toes, and teeth, or nose pores might go to the UN to complain about the violation of their fundamental rights if you don’t consume the right product.

Rihanna’s New Single “Only Girl (In The World)” Coming Next Week
As noted last week, Rihanna’s not-yet-titled fifth LP is due out by year’s end. Now Ryan Seacrest has announced that the first single, “Only Girl (In The World),” will premiere on September 7 on his official site. “An iTunes arrival date and album release date are yet to be confirmed,” says the American Idol host. “But word within the music community is that ‘Only Girl’ is an undeniable smash hit.” The track is produced by Stargate, so finger’s crossed it’s another “Rude Boy”-sized jam.
XLR8R Seeks Editorial Intern in SF
XLR8R is looking for an editorial intern in its San Francisco office, to start immediately. Please check out the requirements below and email your cover letter and 3-4 samples/clips here.
Deerhunter – “Helicopter” Video
Gauzy close-ups of Bradford Cox paint the heartbreak of “Helicopter,”‘ a track from the Halcyon Digest LP coming 9/28 via 4AD. Click on Halycon Digest’s Dennis Cooper text to load the film.
The band debuted this song on BBC 6Music a few months back. Here’s that in portable form:
Video: Röyksopp: "The Drug"
In the new video for Röyksopp's percolating instrumental "The Drug", three girls in airbrushed t-shirts wander around a skull-strewn apocalyptic landscape. This, naturally, turns into a surreal, hallucinatory, narrative-free horror movie, complete with assault rifles, white wolves, and kids with horribly mutilated faces. Noel Paul and Stefan Moore direct, and their cinematography game is absolutely on point. Watch the video below or at Pitchfork.tv.
